July 17 Archeological site at Delos

We landed at a fairly desolate site in the ship's lifeboats

Another day, another excursion - I can’t keep up! This morning we landed at Delos, another of the Cyclades Islands and the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis – and more ruins! The historic importance and size of the archaeological site here earned it UNESCO World Heritage listing. It covers over half of the island and is home to many shrines and temples - it is a veritable open-air museum. The site wrapped around a good part of the shoreline so it is a rather stunning place. Unfortunately for us our guide charged around the site rarely waiting for all in her group to catchup.  As a result I didn't pick up a lot of the history but enjoyed instead the shape and form of the ruins trying to imagine what this significant place would have been like in its heyday. This visit is told with photos. Enjoy!

A portal survives
Imposible to know what but still a flower grows
King of an ancient 'castle'.
One can imagine thos columns once formed a mighty building
A little worn with age but still impressive
Terrace of the Lions where five marble lions stand to protect the city
