We woke to a blustery day and although it was Christmas Day, it felt like any other day except for one important difference - we were entering the Weddell Sea. Few people get to visit the Weddell Sea so it was a bit exciting. Normally the sea is packed with ice but we found sufficient clear water to visit a few places.

Christmas lunch |
We were soon passing massive cliffs dark and looming – this was Brown Bluff. The expedition team tried to find a landing place but it was simply too windy and the sea too wild. Next possible landing option was James Ross Island. Here a number of people went ashore to a place called ‘The Naze’. This as the name suggests, is a long stretch of seemingly bare ground, but those that went ashore said that there was plenty of wildlife around.

Our own Antarctic plum pudding! |
We were served a traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings and later that night the dining room was decked out for Christmas - we even had a visit from Santa. All rather fun and the mood was jolly.

Some got to sit on Santa's knee! |
