Jan 8-15 Ushuaia between expeditions

We back on terra firma (missing the rolling of the ocean) and have been in Ushuaia a week. At the moment we’re between expeditions and have used the lay over time to catch up on writing and sorting photos from our Antarctic Peninsula expedition – there were a lot of pix! We did a little exploring around town and took a great excursion northeast across the mountains to explore the ancient/old growth Fuegian forest and lakes but the rest of the time we’ve been conserving energy as the next 4 weeks could be demanding.

Here are a few images of Ushuaia where we are almost feeling like locals!

We've seen a few large ships but most are much smaller
The breakfast room where we have spent hours working. It's delightful
Our hotel - Alto Andino
Our hotel, Alto Andino, has 360 degree views of the Beagle Channel, the harbour and wharf  where we can see liners and ships coming and going, and the surrounding Andes mountains.  Across the road from us there is a babywear shop (go figure), a fashion shop, hairdresser, 'take away' open (sometimes), a minimart (our local). In the next block is a plumbing supplier, and in the opposite direction a paint shop, pharmacist and a furniture shop. What more could you want!? The city is interesting and seems to be made up of tiny neighbourhoods.
Its a city of steeps and steep streets - not my favourite but ......
Colourful houses dot the hill-sides
The only busker we saw - juggling at the intersection between traffic lights.
We've seen a few Argentinian BBQs
Small buses transport people around the towns of Terra del Fuego
Argentinian peso is equal to AU$0.80
This old tub reminds us of bygone days
Knowing that we are going to be indulging in delicious French food over the next 4 weeks, we have mostly self-catered with the occasional 'dine out' including a couple of nights at a relaxing empanada (and pizza) place a couple of blocks away. They speak little English and well, we speak practically no Spanish - yet we eat very well. It's point and smile and the wine is cheap and absolutely drinkable. The staff are delightful and the food was delicious.
The picante sauce is just that but I suspect we use it too liberally. Interesting serviette holder.
We had Empanadas last night. Absolutely scrumptious,
