This morning we docked at the island of Corfu which lies off the west coast of Albania and Greece. The old town is perched strategically at the entrance to the Adriatic Sea and dates back to the C8 BC. Small though the island is, it has been fought over for millennia - the Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans, more recently French, British and Greeks. Not surprising then that the Old Town has been well fortified and over the course of time, those forts have been repaired and partly rebuilt several times; the forts were designed by Venetian engineers.

Corfu is located very strategically for many countries north |
We were only there for the morning and passengers could disembark and go ashore. There were quite a few other cruise ships docked there however so we chose not to fight through thousands of sightseers. That afternoon we continued north through quite choppy seas towards Montenegro accompanied by a though-provoking lecture from Prof Bertrand on the geopolitics of the Mediterranean.

This vessel disgorged thousands into the cobbled streets of old Corfu |
